Hello readers and welcome to a very overdue blog post! It’s been I don’t know how long since our last entry so I think you all deserve an update on what we’ve been up to. So back in March with our friends at Head4Arts, and Francesca Kay ran a writing workshop for the Spread the Word Literature Festival in Redhouse, Merthyr Tydfil. Now I know a “writing workshop” may sound a little dull to many of you but I think this one had something a little different; Augmented Reality. “What is that?” I hear you cry! Well i’ll tell you. Augmented Reality (AR for short) is the combining of the real world and digital world. If you’ve ever used the weird snapchat filters that turns your head into an onion or Pokémon Go then you’ve used AR. It basically overlays a video or graphic or information on top of the real world.
So back to the festival, which was all Harry Potter themed by the way. As a die hard Harry Potter fan this was the best news ever! The courtyard was basically Hogwarts. Dumbledore and Volde on stilts just wandering around the place, wand lessons, broom flying and so many kids dressed as Harry running around. But unfortunately for all the aspiring Harry Potters we had to confiscate their wands due to the dangerous nature of our workshop; spell writing. As a famous wizard once said “There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class”. We helped the wannabe wizards to write a spell that would reveal what was inside our magical photo frames and through the power of AR magic (and an ipad disguised as a magic mirror) the photos came to life!
Want to see them for yourself? All you need is a phone/tablet with the free app called Zappar on it. Open up the app and scan the images below (and chant some magic words! No?) to reveal the beast within! These might not be as impressive as they were on the wall in their frames but you get the idea of what went on.by
