Private JJ Price Digital Story Transcript

I used to be in the Royal Regiment of Wales and one of our battle honours is Gheluvelt in Belgium from the First World War, the Chateau of Gheluvelt. The end of last year was the 100th anniversary of the battle of Gheluvelt so we went over in mass to rededicate the Cenotaph, lay wreaths, and etcetera. But while I was there with my sister, my wife and my brother in law, we went to see my great grandfather’s grave. He was Private JJ Price from the Welsh Regiment. He died in 1918 in the Somme and we managed to find his grave and lay a wreath. To die in 1918 6 months before the end of the war and you think “you couldn’t have waited a few more months!” He died in a field ambulance unit and they buried them there and then. So throughout Belgium every farmer’s field has got small graveyards and then you’ve got the big ones. In his [grandfather] graveyard there were something like 32 graves in a row which were all Australian soldiers.
